San Diego State Renews Its Rivalry With Point Loma Nazarene This Saturday Night At Cox Arena
After 40 years of not playing each other in a regular season contest, San Diego State and Point Loma Nazarene renew their rivalry this Saturday night at Cox Arena.

Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. PST and the contest can be heard on CASH 1700 AM with Alan Horton calling play-by-play. There is no television coverage for this game.

The Aztecs lead the overall series 7-5 and will be looking for its second straight victory over Point Loma Nazarene. The last time these two schools met was on Jan. 2, 1965, in San Diego at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs posted a season-high for points in that game en route to a 97-66 victory. This is the first time SDSU has played Point Loma in a regular season contest under its current name. The previous 12 meetings came when PLNU went by Pasadena Nazarene and was located in Pasadena, Calif.

Last year, Point Loma Nazarene and SDSU played during the exhibition season with the Aztecs walking away with a 87-67 win at Cox Arena.

San Diego State is 3-2 this season and is coming off a 90-80 defeat to crosstown rival San Diego Wednesday night at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The loss snapped the Aztecs three-game winning streak over the Toreros and follows SDSU's two-game stretch where they defeated consecutive opponents (Southern Mississippi, 79-51 and Albany, 80-53) by 25 or more points for the first time since 1981. The game saw four Aztecs score in double figures, but they could not overcome USD's hot shooting as they shot 60 percent from the field in the second half. Junior guard Brandon Heath led all scorers with 24 points, followed by Marcus Slaughter's 23 points. The junior forward also pitched in with nine rebounds. Senior center Mohamed Camara, who started in place of the injured Trimaine Davis, posted his first career double-double with his career-best 10 points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Guard John Sharper added 12 points as he went 4-for-6 from three-point distance marking his fourth consecutive game in which the senior has made multiple three-pointers in a contest. In his last three games, Sharper is 11-of-17 from beyond the arc.

The Sea Lions are off to a 5-1 (1-0 Golden State Athletic Conference) start and are winners of their last four games. PLNU's only blemish is a five-point, 89-84, road loss to Southern Nazarene. During its four-game winning streak, Point Loma Nazarene has had some close calls. On Nov. 11, the Sea Lions recorded an 87-82 victory over Holy Names, sqeaked out a two-point win against Westminster, cruised to an 18-point win over Carroll College and earned a 66-65 victory at Cal Baptist. PLNU is led by its four double-digit scorers in Tim Kruge (15.2 ppg), Xavier Lopez (12.8), Matt Benson (12.5) and Casey Ortiz (12.5).

After Saturday's Point Loma Nazarene game, San Diego State will have a couple days off before playing Pac-10 Conference member, California, Tuesday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
