NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The San Diego State women's rowing team got solid performances in three separate events Sunday morning at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport Beach, Calif. A third-place finish in the Open Eights event was among the highlights for the Aztecs, as they continued their fall schedule at the Newport Aquatic Center.

"This was one of our best showings ever at Newport," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "The fact that our three boats finished in the top 11 (of the Open Eights) shows we have a lot of depth this year and holds promise for the spring. Overall, I was very pleased with the results."

The SDSU `A' boat covered the 4,400-meter course in 16 minutes, 21 seconds, just three seconds behind runner-up Sacramento State (16:18). The UCLA `A' boat captured first place out of 24 entries with a 15:55 clocking. The SDSU `B' boat finished tied for eighth with Saint Mary's `A' with a time of 16:47, only one second behind seventh-place Sacramento State `B' (16:46), while the SDSU `C' crew (17:03) just missed a top-10 finish, coming in right behind Long Beach State (16:59).

The Aztecs' lone entry in the Frosh/Novice Eight competition came away with a fourth-place finish out of 20 boats, completing the course in 18:01, well ahead of USC `B' (18:27), UC Santa Barbara (18:49) and Orange Coast CC (18:49). UCLA once again finished first with a winning mark of 17:17.

"Our novice boat went out and beat some crews with a little more experience," coach Zebroski said. "The distance they put between themselves and the rest of the field is a testament to their hard work and shows that they've been learning very quickly in the short time they've been together."

In the Open Fours race, meanwhile, the Aztec `A' boat (18: 44) edged the Aztec `B' crew (18:46) for the third place in the 13-boat field, which was won by Sacramento State (18:08).

SDSU will conclude its fall schedule Nov. 13, at the San Diego Fall Classic on Mission Bay. The Aztecs will have three crews race in the women's Collegiate Eight competition, along with two boats in the women's Novice Eight event.
