BERKELEY, Calif. - Calen Carr scored the winning goal six minutes into the first overtime period as California defeated nine-man San Diego State, 1-0, Friday afternoon in Berkeley. The win improved the 10th-ranked Golden Bears to 12-3-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the Pac-10. SDSU, ranked 15th in the nation this week, saw its record fall to 9-2-5 (2-2-4 Pac-10).
After a scoreless first half, Cal opened the scoring in the 68th minute as Jeff Seratini took a pass from teammate Andrew Jacobson and hit a shot from 15 yards out that beat SDSU goalie Tally Hall. It was Seratini's first goal of the season.
Late in the contest, the Aztecs found themselves down to 10 men when senior defender Matt Couch was shown a red card for a serious foul at 82:20. Despite playing a man short, the Aztecs tied the game with just under three minutes left when Omar Persad's throw-in was headed into goal by senior Heath Creager at 87:13. It was Creager's third goal in the past two games.
San Diego State was put further in the hole a minute later when Raul Bautista received his second yellow card on the afternoon and was dismissed from the contest.
Cal's winning goal began with a dribbling run by Luke Sassano, whose pass to Carr was slotted into the goal from 10 yards. It was Carr's 10th goal of the season and his sixth game-winner.
Both SDSU's Hall and Golden Bear goalkeeper Erik Kronberg were both busy much of the afternoon as Hall was called upon to make a season-high nine saves with Kronberg making four stops.
San Diego State will now have a day off before traveling to Palo Alto where they will face Pac-10 foe Stanford on Sunday (Nov. 6) at 1:00 p.m.
