SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track and field team announced the signing Monday of prep standout Janie James to a national letter of intent. The sprinter from El Cajon, Calif., will compete for the Aztecs beginning with the 2006-07 season.
James, currently a senior at Helix High School, placed fourth in the 400-meter dash at the CIF state finals this past June with a personal-best time of 54.37. James' mark would put her 10th on the Aztecs' all-time list.
"We're very pleased that Janie has signed with us," SDSU head coach Rahn Sheffield said. "She is the first local prep standout we've signed since Sophia Hawker (of Grossmont High in 1997)."
"With the stellar development that this program has had with sprinters and hurdlers, it is amazing that we have been unable to obtain a commitment from any standout sprinters from San Diego directly out of high school," Sheffield added. "It is very refreshing that Janie sees the national and world-class caliber of this program and its athletes and wants to be a part of it."
