SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young secured the regular-season Mountain West Conference title with a 3-0 (36-34, 30-26, 30-26) win over San Diego State Friday evening in Peterson Gym. The Aztecs did not make it easy for the 22nd-ranked Cougars, who improved to 22-2 overall and 13-2 in league play. SDSU saw its record fall to 15-13 (7-8 MWC).
San Diego State got 13 kills apiece from Brandie Molnar and Melanie Greene along with 11 from Audra Dent, but it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive strength of BYU.
The Cougars' Erica Lott led all players with 22 kills while teammate Chelsea Goodman recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Brigham Young hit .379 over the three games compared to .236 for the Aztecs. The Cougars also out-blocked SDSU 11 to 4.5 with Rachel Dyer contributing a match-high seven block assists.
The first game was an extended affair that saw the score tied on 17 occasions. Both teams had three chances to put the game away as it went to extra points, with the visitor finally doing so with the aid of an Aztec attack error.
Games two and three played out in a similar pattern, with the score being tied on 11 and 18 occasions respectively in those contests. In both instances, it was when the score was in the mid-20s that the Cougars seemed to have the extra push to take control and emerge with the win.
San Diego State concludes its 2005 regular season on Saturday (Nov. 19) when it hosts Utah at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym. The match will also mark Aztec Senior Night as the program honor four athletes playing their final home match at SDSU.
