SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State doubles team of Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen defeated the Arizona tandem of Stephanie Balzert and Juliette Mavroleon, 8-5, on Friday to advance to the finals of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Aztecs' duo will face U of A's Kasia Jakowlew and Jessie Rochefort for the title on Saturday.
In Flight B singles competition, Sisse Nielsen also cruised to an easy quarterfinal win over Erin Katayama of Hawai'i in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Later in the semifinals, fourth-seeded Nielsen was locked up in a tight match with Petra Teller of BYU-Hawaii. After losing a tough opening set, 7-6, the Aztec sophomore stormed back to grab the second set, 6-4, and was leading 3-1 in the third before rain suspended their match, which will resume Saturday. In another Flight B quarterfinal, Esther Cadua fell to Tina Razloznik of Arizona in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2.
In Flight A singles action, second-seeded Dita Hauerlandova rallied to defeat Arizona's Juliette Mavroleon in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Hauderlandova, however, lost by default in the semifinals to Jing Jing Liu of BYU-Hawaii. Earlier, Liu eliminated Eliska Krausova in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-1, while top-seeded Alesya Vidov also fell by default to Julia Ustyuzhanina of BYU-Hawaii.
Tournament play wraps up on Saturday with Flight A and B singles and doubles championship matches.
