SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team concluded its fall schedule on a high note Friday, posting three singles victories to go along with a sweep in doubles play in a dual match against the University of Hawai'i in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Aztecs endured rainy conditions and a venue change in their final tune-up before January, which featured individual competition and no team score.
The SDSU-Hawai'i clash actually began Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex before rain interrupted doubles competition, with the Aztecs leading in all three contests. Play was suspended until Friday and lingering showers forced the action to resume at Central Oahu Regional Park. The change of scenery did not faze SDSU, as it was able complete the doubles sweep.
In singles action, meanwhile, junior Christian Groh (Crailsheim, Germany) survived a nail-biter in the first set against Hawaii's Sascha Heinemann before dominating the rest of the way en route to a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 triumph. Junior Markus Dickhardt (Marburg, Germany) and senior Stephan Timu (Montreal, Quebec) took care of business in their respective matches, as each recorded straight-set victories.
The Aztecs will return to action in two months to compete in the Sherwood Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Jan. 13-16.
