SAN DIEGO - Aztec setter Kristen Castillo has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Academic volleyball team. The sophomore from Torrance, Calif., was honored for her combination of athletic abilities and her performance in the classroom.
A pre-nursing major with a cumulative 3.85 grade point average, Castillo has been SDSU's starting setter since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2004. This season she is sharing the setting duties as the Aztecs play a 6-2 formation. She is averaging 6.65 assists per game along with 1.42 digs per contest. She is hitting .364 with only four attack errors in 66 chances.
Castillo was a member of the 2004 Mountain West conference All-Academic team and was also named a 2004-05 MWC Scholar-Athlete award winner. She is also a two-time recipient of the SDSU Monty Award, given to student-athletes with a 3.5 gpa and above.
To be eligible for nomination to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, athletes must have a minimum 3.20 cumulative gpa and have been at their current school for at least one full academic year.
