SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team advanced five singles players into the quarterfinal round and one doubles team to the semifinals as the Aztecs completed day one action at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Thursday.
In Flight A singles competition, sophomore Eliska Krausova breezed through her first round match as she defeated Jacqui Williams of Hawai'i, 6-0, 6-0. Joining her in the next round are the tournament's top two seeds in senior Dita Hauerlandova and junior Alesya Vidov. Both upperclassmen received first-round byes to begin the invitational.
Freshman Esther Cadua experienced no problems as well, downing Hawai'i's Julia Sandborn in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight B action. Fourth-seeded Sisse Nielsen advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to her first-round bye.
In doubles play, the top-seeded team of Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen recorded an 8-5 win over Arizona's Tina Razloznik and Camelia Todorova to advance to the semifinal round where they will play the Wildcats' Stephanie Balzert/Juliette Mavroleon tomorrow.
At the opposite end of the doubles draw, Cadua and Yuki Hagiwara dropped their opening-round match, 8-3, to BYU-Hawaii's Petra Teller and Gurianna Korinihona.
Day two of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational resumes tomorrow beginning with doubles play at 9 a.m. with singles following at 11 a.m. HST.
