San Diego State senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland) is tied for second place following a first-round 2-under-par 70 at the Kent Youel Invitational in Kapolei, Hawaii. MacRae's score helped the Aztecs end up in sixth place out of 18 teams with a 19-over 307 after the first 18 holes Tuesday at the par-72, 6,255-yard Kapolei Golf Course.
MacRae's first-round score is a team season-best and one stroke better than her previous career best for 18 holes, which she tallied on three occasions during the 2003-04 campaign. She is currently tied for second place on the individual leaderboard with Baylor's Josefin Svenningsson and USC's Paola Moreno, and is one stroke behind tournament leader, Stanford's Kelly Husted.
MacRae was helped by true freshman Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), who is tied for 12th out of the 98 golfers with a 3-over 75. Another true freshman, Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), is tied with teammate, sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), for 64th place after both fired first round 81s.
The Aztecs were without the services of redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.), who was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
The teams continue play Tuesday afternoon with another 18 holes, followed by the final round Wednesday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (HT) with a shotgun start.
