SAN DIEGO - San Diego State basketball coach Steve Fisher announced the signing of three players - Jervaughn Johnson, Jon Pastorek and Kashif Watson - to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.
"We know we have added three quality student-athletes to our program today," Fisher said. "We like the fact that they are three different type of players and eventually we will likely see all three on the floor at the same time. They will help upgrade the level of basketball at San Diego State."
Johnson, a 6-6, 225-pound forward, is a senior at Centennial High in Compton, Calif. He earned freshman All-America honors from Student Sports and was one of just three freshmen invited to the prestigious ABCD Camp in Tenack, N.J. Last season, he helped lead Centennial to a 22-6 record and earned sixth team all-state honors. His prep team enters the season ranked 32nd in the preseason Fab 50 National Basketball Rankings as listed by CalHiSports.com. Johnson is rated the 26th best player in the country in the class of 2006 by basketballphenoms.com.
"Jervaughn will come in and be one of the strongest players on our team next season," Fisher said. "He has a major college basketball body right now. He will be hard to guard because of his strength and size inside and compliments with a good perimeter game. He is accustomed to winning and expects to win."
Pastorek, a 6-9 forward, is a senior at Canyon High in Anaheim, Calif. He has grown nine inches during his prep career and helped lead his team to an 18-9 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the Century League last season. He led the conference in blocked shots last season. Pastorek owns a 4.0 grade-point average and also visited Princeton and UC Santa Barbara.
"Jon is someone that as we continued to see him play we knew we wanted him to be an Aztec," Fisher said. "He is a skilled basketball player who has grown considerably in high school. That has given him the ability to play the post position but have the skills of a perimeter player. He continues to look stronger every time we see him."
Watson, a 6-3, 180-pound guard, is currently attending Winchendor (Mass.) Academy. While at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, Watson was ranked as the second best shooting guard on the West coast and ranked among the top 35 players at the two-guard position nationally by Rivals.com. He was named to Street & Smith's High Honorable Mention All-America team.
"Kashif is a player that we have recruited for several years and we are very excited to sign him," Fisher said. "He brings a toughness and athleticism you have to have to win at this level. He led his team to a state high school championship. He has the potential to be a great defender and has the ability to score outside and as a slasher. We are excited to have him at San Diego State."
