SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis program will play host to its annual SDSU Fall Tennis Classic this Friday-Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center. This year's invitational will feature an elite field that features seven schools, all of which finished the 2005 season ranked in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
Georgia Tech, a round of 16 participant in last year's NCAA tournament, ended the season ranked No. 6 in the final ITA poll and returns to Montezuma Mesa for the first time since 2004. Also making the trip west for a second consecutive year is fellow Atlantic Coast Conference member Florida State (No. 43). Last season, the Seminoles earned a narrow 4-3 victory over SDSU in a battle against two teams ranked inside the top 35 on March 8.
In addition to Florida State, Rice (No. 51), Long Beach State (No. 59) and San Diego (No. 68) make return trips to Aztec Tennis Center. Mountain West Conference foe New Mexico, which ended the year ranked No. 50, also joins the field this weekend.
The Aztecs are coming off their 18th NCAA tournament appearance in 2005 and finished last season ranked 47th in the nation. Returning this year are all-conference performers senior Dita Hauerlandova and junior Alesya Vidov along with sophomores Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen.
Doubles play begins Friday at 9 a.m. with singles action to follow at 10 a.m.
