SOMIS, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team took home its first tournament win of the season today after carding a final team score of 893 at Pepperdine's Club Glove Intercollegiate. Sophomore David Palm defeated fellow Aztec senior Josh Warthen in a one-hole playoff to claim the individual title.
Today's win marks the first time that SDSU won the team event and had individuals - sophomore David Palm and senior Josh Warthen - share medalist honors. This is the first time that both Palm and Warthen have taken first in a tournament with the Aztecs.
"This is a huge win for our program," head coach Ryan Donovan said. "It is such a difficult course and for us to respond with maturity, patience and excellent play when teams were making runs at us.
"We talked about winning a fall tournament just to know we could do it and to give us that confidence later at the NCAA championships. Teams that contend for the national championship have all won events during the season and we felt that was important for us to do. We also wanted to put pressure on us by making that a priority."
Palm, who dominated throughout the duration of the tournament, closed today's competition with a three-round score of 68-75-77--220. On Monday, Palm shot a first round score of 4-under 68.
Warthen, who also finished with a tournament total of 220, closed out the final day of competition with a 1-over 73, tying him with Palm after three rounds forcing a playoff with Palm.
Two other Aztecs placed in the top-20, as sophomore Chad Moscovic tied for 13th with a 231 (+15) and senior Andrew Scott finished in a tie for 16th (+16).
The Aztecs will return to action on October 14-15 when they will travel to Fresno, Calif. for the Lexus Golf Classic.
