SAN DIEGO - Two novice crews from the San Diego State women's rowing team enjoyed a successful debut Sunday at the San Diego Row for the Cure on Mission Bay. Competing in their first regatta of the season, the Aztec newcomers finished 1-2 in the Collegiate Novice Eight race, as both boats easily outdistanced two entries from the University of San Diego.

The SDSU `A' boat covered the 4,200-meter course in 17:43, while the Aztec `B' boat followed with a 18:13 clocking, well ahead of both USD `A' (19:19) and USD `B' (21:12).

"It was a great way for the novice boats to start their season," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "They've only been practicing for about six weeks now and I'm happy with their progress so far. Their outstanding performances should bode well for the rest of the season. I'm excited about their potential."

The San Diego Row for the Cure is the companion event to the Race for the Cure, both of which raise funds for the awareness and treatment of breast cancer through the San Diego affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

SDSU will travel to Newport Beach next Sunday to compete at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Nov. 6, set to begin at 8 a.m. The Aztecs will have three crews race in the women's Open Eight competition, along with two boats in the women's Open Fours and a single entry in the women's Frosh/Novice Eight event.
