SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team recorded two victories in doubles competition, but came up empty in singles play on Monday at the 2005 USD Torero Challenge played on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Aztecs squared off against their crosstown rivals at the Toreros' West Courts on the final day of round-robin action, which also featured USC and Washington.
"We played some tough matches over the last few days," head coach Gene Carswell said. "We learned a lot about ourselves during that time and what we need to work on for the rest of the fall."
SDSU started the day on a high note, taking two of three doubles matches. The duo of Markus Dickhardt and Christian Groh defeated the USD tandem of Oscar Plotnik and Jonas Mouly, 8-6, while the pair of Robert Sabo and Anthony Gomez prevailed, 9-8 (3), in a grueling match against the Toreros' Matt Ozurovich and Michael Meschede. The Aztecs' Stephan Timu and Eugenio Romero were also locked up in a tight contest, but fell, 9-7, to Thomas Liversage and Mirza Korstovic.
Before the start of singles play, however, Dickhardt and Groh withdrew because of illness, forcing SDSU to shuffle its lineup. The results were not favorable, as the Aztecs dropped all four matches.
SDSU will next travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, to take on the University of Hawai'i on Nov. 10.
