BOSTON - The San Diego State women's crew team placed 34th out of 47 boats Sunday at the 41st Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass. The Aztecs' Varsity Eight boat competed in the Championship Eight race, finishing with a time of 18:29.949 over the three-mile course on the Charles River.

The USRowing national team won the event with a time of 16:34.633, followed by Princeton University (16:50.059), London Training Center (16:56.389), Virginia (17:00.156) and Princeton Training Center (17:03.440).

"This was a good learning experience for our team," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "It was our first race of the year and we went up against some high-caliber, championship crews, so today was a good gauge of where we need to go from here."

The Championship Eight event on Sunday featured seven of the top 10 finishers at last season's NCAA Championships, 11 crews ranked in the final Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing poll of the 2005 spring season and several nationally recognized club crews.

The Head of the Charles Regatta was first held in 1965 and has grown to become the world's largest two-day rowing competition. Over 7,000 athletes from around the world now compete in 27 race events, which attract over 300,000 spectators.

SDSU will hold its annual alumni race and family fun day Oct. 29 at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, while on Oct. 30, the Aztecs will participate in the San Diego Row for the Cure, which is slated for North Ski Beach on Mission Bay and benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
