SAN DIEGO - Behind a penalty kick goal by senior Amanda Swiader and nine saves by sophomore goalkeeper Cat Burson, the San Diego State women's soccer team played No. 12 BYU to a 1-1, double-overtime tie on Saturday afternoon. After the tie, the Aztecs are now 2-2-2 in the Mountain West Conference and 10-7-2 overall, while the Cougars are 4-1-1 in MWC play and 15-1-2 overall.
BYU had the first chance of the game just 8:30 into the first half, but Burson made a diving save to her right on a Natalie Nate shot, keeping the game scoreless.
In the 22nd minute (21:40), Jen Mello was taken down in the box by Cougar goalkeeper Erika Woodbury, and the SDSU was awarded a penalty kick. Swiader, the all-time Aztec active leader in scoring with 21 points (six goals and nine assists), put the ball into the lower-right corner to give SDSU an early 1-0 lead.
BYU responded at the 25:00 mark, when Katie Larkin beat an Aztec defender and scored on a shot to the upper-left corner from eight yards out. Larkin finished with a game-high nine shots, including six on goal.
The match would stay 1-1 for the remaining 65 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
SDSU's best chance to take the lead came in the 72nd minute, but sophomore Ashley Tenn's nine-yard shot missed just right of the net.
Burson (4-3-2) played all 110 minutes and finished with the nine stops. Woodbury (15-1-2) played the whole game, but did not make a save.
For the match, the Cougars outshot the Aztecs, 20-11, and had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Erika Sutton had a team-high four shots and Tenn had three attempts to pace the SDSU offense. Swiader and sophomore Jessica Girdner also contributed two shots apiece.
The Aztecs will travel to UNLV for their final MWC regular season game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
