The San Diego State women's tennis team completed day one action by sending four singles players into the third round of the 2005 Wilson/ITA West Region Championships at Barnes Tennis Center on Monday. Junior Alesya Vidov, sophomores Eliska Krausova and Sisse Nielsen and freshman Esther Cadua each won all of their respective matches to move on in the tournament hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego.

After receiving a first-round bye, Vidov, the tournament's 12th seed, defeated Arizona's Jessie Rochefort, 6-2, 7-6. Joining Vidov in third round is doubles partner Krausova. The sophomore from the Czech Republic won in straight sets against Claire Fermin of UC Irvine, 6-4, 7-5, and was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Cal State Northridge's Sonya Kumar.

Fellow classmate Nielsen also turned in a solid performance by defeating Cal State Fullerton's Cheyenne Inglis, 6-0, 6-2, and Long Beach State's Krystina Katayama, 6-1, 6-4.

Cadua, an SDSU newcomer, was successful in her first collegiate action as she downed Jessica Winkler of Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, 6-2, and recorded a convincing 6-0, 6-0, win over Hana Im of Cal State Northridge in the second round.

Junior college transfer Yuki Hagiwara was victorious in her first round match as she defeated Cal State Fullerton's Chip Dunbar, 6-2, 6-1, but same could not be said in the round of 64 as she fell to Loyola Marymount's Pavla Mesterova, the tournament's A-seeded player, 6-0, 6-2.

In first round doubles action, both Aztec duos fell in their respective matches. Vidov and Krausova dropped a tight 9-8(2) decision to UC Irvine's Becky Bernhard-Ali Borowicz, while Cadua and Hagiwara fell to UC Santa Barbara's Andrea Pintar-Leslie Damion, 8-1.

The Aztec doubles team of Dita Hauerlandova-Sisse Nielsen received an opening-round bye and will face UCI's Jayme Hu-Lisa Shih, who were 9-8(5) first-round winners over San Diego's Sophia Vogt and Helene Lindstrand, Friday morning.

Day two of the 2005 Wilson/ITA West Region Championships will continue tomorrow at Barnes Tennis Center beginning with second-round doubles action at 9 a.m.
