Volleyball Outlasts New Mexico In Five-Game Match

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State notched its third consecutive Mountain West Conference victory with a 3-2 (24-30, 30-26, 30-27, 24-30, 16-14) triumph over New Mexico Saturday night in Albuquerque. It was the Aztecs' first five-game match of the season and only their second in the past two years as they improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in league play. The loss dropped the Lobos to 8-5 (1-3 MWC).

SDSU got 13 kills apiece from three players: Melanie Greene, Lindsey Noll and Alicia Waller. Greene and Waller completed their double-doubles by recording 14 and 12 digs respectively while Noll contributed seven blocks.

Green also tied a career-best with six service aces, the third time she reached figure during the 2005 season. In addition, Waller's 13 kills was a personal season high for the freshman outside hitter from Cypress, Calif.

He Aztecs won the match despite hitting .119 compared to UNM's .206 attack percentage. Both teams tallied 15.5 blocks with SDSU recording nine service aces to four for the home side.

After the Aztecs and Lobos split the first four games, the fifth and deciding contest saw eight ties and four lead changes before it was decided. New Mexico had a chance to win it with a 14-13 lead, but a service error gave SDSU new life. Noll then scored the final two points for the Aztecs with a kill and a block to give SDSU the hard-fought victory.

San Diego State continues road action later as they next travel to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:00 p.m. in their lone match of the week.
