The San Diego State women's golf team has a two-stroke lead after two rounds at the 2005 TaylorMade/adidas Lady Aztec Fall Classic Monday at the par-72, 6,259-yard (The) Auld Course in Chula Vista, Calif. The Aztecs erased a seven-stroke deficit after a rainy first round by posting a 305 in the next 18 holes for a day-one total of 29-over 605. SDSU is ahead of round one leader Sacramento State (607) by two strokes and third place Northern Arizona (609) by four strokes.
"I think we played consistently, but we have a better performance in us," SDSU head coach Felicia Brown said. "The weather made the conditions a few shots harder than we expected. Tomorrow's going to be a good battle."
Sacramento State's Margaux Sheehan is the only golfer in the 72-player field under par, posting a tournament-low 68 (-4) in the first 18 holes. She followed it up with a 75 in the afternoon for a 1-under 143. Sheehan owns a slim one-shot lead over second place Ali Carter of Northern Arizona, while Cal State Northridge's Jennifer Yoo is two strokes back.
Senior Heather MacRae is the Aztecs' top golfer with a 36-hole total of 4-over 148, which is good for fifth place overall. MacRae, who is playing for the SDSU `A' team, is followed by freshman Maki Kamimura (9-over 153) and redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (10-over 154), who are tied for 17th and 22nd place, respectively.
The SDSU `B' team is currently sixth overall in the 13-team standings and was led by sophomore Anna Booth's 5-over 149, which is good for sixth place.
Aztec freshman and Hilltop High School graduate Heather Wilson, competing individually in her first collegiate event, is tied for 12th overall at 8-over 152.
The teams will close out competition Tuesday with the third and final round beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
