COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior safety Reggie Grigsby (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) has been named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference Monday morning. The weekly honor is the first of his career.
Grigsby recorded 11 tackles, including a team-high eight solo stops, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass to help lead the Aztecs to a 28-19 victory over Utah in Salt Lake City.
In the third quarter, with the Utes driving and the Aztecs holding onto a 21-13 lead, Grigsby intercepted a Brian Johnson pass at the Aztec 14-yard line and returned it 21 yards. The interception was his first of the season and second of his career.
Later in the game, the senior sealed the win for SDSU after forcing Utah running back Quinton Ganther to fumble the ball at the Aztec 1-yard line that was eventually recovered by teammate Marcus Demps in the end zone late in the fourth quarter. The forced fumble was the first of his career.
For the season, Grigsby is second on the team this season with 57 tackles and his 8.1 stops per game is fourth-best in the MWC.
Grigsby joins defensive teammate Russell Allen as the only Aztecs to earn the weekly award this season. In the conference's seven-year history, San Diego State has been the recipient of the defensive award 13 times, including on three different occasions last season.
SDSU takes on New Mexico in a MWC match-up this Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium with kick-off set for 7:07 p.m. The game will be broadcast by SportsWest and can be seen locally on Channel 4 San Diego.
