SEATTLE - The San Diego State women's soccer team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Washington in the second round of the Husky/Nike Invitational Sunday afternoon in Seattle, Wash. The win was the first for an Aztec team over the Pac-10 Huskies (No. 12 in the west region) in the program's 17-year history.

Freshman Jen Mello tallied the game's lone goal at the 79:32 mark when she took classmate Erika Sutton's original shot, which was deflected by the Washington (0-2-2) goalkeeper, and knocked it into the wide-open net for her second goal of the season. Sutton and fellow freshman Millie Allen were both credited with assists on the play.

"We made a couple of adjustments in the second half," said head coach Mike Giuliano of SDSU, which outshot the Huskies, 6-1, in the second session. "The thing that I was impressed about most with the team was that after we scored our goal, we didn't allow a shot the rest of the game. We buckled down and it was really nice to see."

Mello, who was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on Monday, and freshman Carrie Blankenbuhler each had three shots to lead the Aztec offensive attack, while Sutton tallied two shots.

Freshman Christi Yount (3-1) made three stops in net for SDSU to record her second shutout of the season. In four games, Yount has played all 360 minutes in goal, and has 17 saves (81.0 save percentage) and a 1.00 goals against average.

For the match, the Aztecs outshot Washington, 12-10, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

SDSU will continue its five-game road trip with a match at No. 9 (Soccer Buzz) Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., at 5 p.m. CDT.
