ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The San Diego State women's golf team jumped one spot in the final standings, moving into a 15th place tie with UTEP, following a final round 305 Wednesday at the 27th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs ended their second tournament of the season with a 54-hole total of 44-over 920 on the par-73, 6,069-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
Pepperdine took home the crown, finishing atop the team leaderboard by shooting a 3-under 873. The Waves also claimed the individual title as well and had two golfers in the top three. Eileen Vargas led all players, carding an 8-under 211. Carolina Llano of Pepperdine tied with Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll for second with a 6-under 213.
The top finisher for SDSU was Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland), who ended the three-day tournament in 34th place, finishing at 7-over 226 for the tournament. MacRae shot even par this morning with a season-best 73. It was a boost in the standings for MacRae, who began the day in 41st place. MacRae also posted an eagle on the eighth hole. It was one of two eagles on the day for the Aztecs, with the other coming from redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) on her second hole of the round. McLeod was fourth among SDSU golfers, finishing in 74th overall.
Sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), followed MacRae as the second Aztec finisher. Booth shot a 10-over 229, with three birdies in the final 18 holes for a 75.
After her great start in the opening round, freshman Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) ended the tournament in 62nd place overall, completing action with an 81, including two birdies.
SDSU will take a three-week break before playing host to the annual Lady Aztec Invitational, Oct. 17-18, at The Auld Course in Chula Vista, Calif.
