SAN DIEGO - After opening the tournament with its best round in over a year, the San Diego State women's golf team had its most difficult day on the course so far this season, slipping from eighth to 16th place overall Tuesday at the 27th annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs shot a second-round 317, giving them a 36-hole total of 31-over-par 615 at the par-73, 6,069-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
SDSU managed only two sub-80 rounds on the day, as sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) carded a 5-over 78 with six bogeys and a birdie on the par-three 12th hole. Senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland), who was 1-over after the first round, ended up at 7-over for the tournament with a day two 79.
The Aztecs' first day leader, freshman Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), had three birdies in the second round but also a pair of double bogeys on the third and 14th holes for a 7-over 80. Kamimura is tied for 35th overall on the individual leaderboard with a 151.
Redshirt freshman Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) matched Kamimura's 80, while freshman Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) rounded out the Aztec golfers with a second-round 88.
Texas A&M and Pepperdine overtook day one leader Ohio State and are tied for first at 2-over 586. Individually, three players, Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll, Pepperdine's Carolina Llano and UNLV's Grace Woo, are knotted at the top at 5-under 141.
Wednesday's third and final round will be a shotgun start, beginning at 8 a.m. SDSU will be paired with Texas Tech and Hawaii and will start on the 16th and 17th holes.
