SAN DIEGO - San Diego State opened its 2005 Mountain West Conference campaign Thursday evening, dropping a 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-20) decision to defending league champion Colorado State in Peterson Gym. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Rams, who improved to 7-3 overall. The Aztecs, meanwhile, saw their three-match win streak halted as they fell to 8-5.
CSU's Casey Bauer and Tess Rogers led all players with 13 and 12 kills respectively while teammate Dre Downs hit .667 with 11 kills over the three games.
San Diego State was led by senior Lindsey Noll, who notched eight kills and seven blocks while hitting .462 on the night. Junior hitters Audra Dent and Melanie Greene chipped in with seven kills apiece.
In game one, Colorado State broke an 8-8 deadlock by winning six of the next seven points, and slowly opened that margin as the contest progressed. The Rams hit .44 while holding SDSU to a .071 attack percentage. CSU's Casey Bauer led all players with six kills while Melanie Greene had three for the home side,
The second game saw the Aztecs record four straight points to take a 9-5 lead, he see Colorado State battle back to knot the score at 11-all. The teams traded points until, at 16-16, the visitors began to pull away, opening up a five-point lead at 23-18. Although SDSU closed to within a point at 23-22, that was as close as they could get before the Rams closed it out at 30-25. Both Audra Dent and Alicia Waller led SDSU with four kills apiece.
Game three was almost a carbon copy of the second game, as the teams traded points before Colorado State pulled away to take a 19-13 lead, going on to capture the game and match.
San Diego State continues home action on Saturday when it hosts Wyoming at noon in Peterson Gym.
