SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State standout Lindsey Hedberg has been named assistant coach for the SDSU women's tennis team, head coach Peter Mattera announced today. Hedberg becomes the sixth assistant coach for a program that has advanced to 18 NCAA tournaments.
Hedberg, a native of Austin, Texas, joins the SDSU women's tennis coaching staff after spending the last two years as a tennis professional at Lomas Santa Fe Country Club in Solana Beach, Calif. Prior to working at Lomas Santa Fe CC, she taught tennis at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.
"I am very excited for Lindsey to rejoin our program in this capacity," Mattera said of the former team captain. "She will bring energy, enthusiasm and lots of tennis expertise to what looks to be a very good 2005-06 SDSU tennis team."
A four-year letterwinner from 2000-03, Hedberg played on three NCAA tournament teams in 2000, 2002 and 2003. She also guided the Aztecs to a pair of Mountain West Conference regular season titles and a MWC Championship crown in 2003.
Hedberg, a three-time all-MWC singles honoree, finished her SDSU career second all-time in singles victories with 78, second in school history with a singles winning percentage of .639 (78-44) (min. 75 decisions) and is eighth in Aztec history for most singles victories in a season with 23 back in 2000. In 2001, she achieved an ITA singles ranking of No. 96.
An all-MWC doubles pick in 2001, she also holds numerous doubles records including the school's top winning percentage (min. 20 decisions) since 1994. Hedberg and Julie Chidley compiled a record of 18-3 over the course of two seasons (2000, 2002) for a winning percentage of .857. The pair shares the record with former Aztecs Indra Erichsen and Silvia Tornier (36-6, 2002-03). While playing with Tornier, the two were ranked as high as No. 19 during the 2000-01 campaign. Hedberg is also on the all-time doubles charts for team victories in a career, team victories in a season and individual doubles wins in a career.
