The San Diego State women's golf team improved its first round score by eight strokes to claim the tournament title Tuesday at the season-opening La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout hosted by Northern Arizona University. The Aztecs finished the 36-hole event with a team score of 30-over 614, including a second round 303, to edge day one leader Sacramento State (615) at the par-73, 6,002-yard Continental Country Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"We really had no idea on the last hole that we were in a position to win, but we knew that it was going to be really close," SDSU head coach Felicia Brown said. "We turned at nine holes really well, but it got kind of tough on the final nine. We were hoping to win (the tournament) coming in, so I'm happy that we could meet that goal in our first action of the season."
SDSU's Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) claimed medalist honors in her first collegiate tournament as the only golfer to finish under par at 1-under 145. The redshirt freshman beat her first round score by one stroke with a 72, and ended up two strokes in front of her nearest competitor, Arizona's Amanda Wilson (147). McLeod's 36-hole score of 145 is tied for second all-time in the school record book, while she is the first Aztec to win a tournament since the fall of 2003.
McLeod was joined in the individual top 10 by senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland), who logged her second consecutive 76 to end up sixth overall at 6-over 152. MacRae led the 50-golfer field in par-5 scoring at three-under in her first collegiate action since the 2003-04 campaign.
Aztec sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) finished 22nd overall with a 160, however, the team's biggest improvement from day one came via senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), and junior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), who upped their first-round scores by five and 12 strokes, respectively.
Individually, freshman Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) was the third Aztec to end up in the top 10, recording a 76 in the final 18 holes for a two-day total of 8-over 154. Freshmen Charlene "Maki" Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), who was 22nd at 160, and Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.), who was 34th at 168, rounded out the SDSU competitors.
The San Diego State women's golf team will be back in action next week when it travels to the prestigious Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 26-28.
