Behind redshirt freshman Megan McLeod's tournament-leading 73, the San Diego State women's golf team is in third place Monday at 19-over 311 in the season-opening La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Shootout hosted by Northern Arizona University. The Aztecs trail first place Sacramento State by just two strokes, while UC Riverside is one up at the par-73, 6,002-yard Continental Country Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.

"With this being our first tournament of the year, it was an okay start, but I know that we can do a lot better," SDSU head coach Felicia Brown said. "I'm hoping the top five will tee-off tomorrow with a sense of determination, pick up the two shots and take home a win."

McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.), who had a pair of birdies, is tied for the individual tournament lead with Western New Mexico's Kim Cammer at even-par 73. The pair have a three-stroke lead on their nearest competition, including Aztec senior Heather MacRae (Dunblane, Scotland), who is tied for third with four others at 3-over 76.

Sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia), who shot a 79, senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), who carded an 83, and junior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.), who ended up at 16-over 89, rounded out the Aztecs' starting five.

SDSU got solid day-one performances from freshmen Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.) and Charlene "Maki" Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.), who are competing individually and are among the tournament's top 19 golfers through the first round. Another newcomer, freshman Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.), is 35th overall in the 50-golfer field with an 86.

Play resumes Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start for the second and final round of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Tournament.
