SAN DIEGO - San Diego State got two goals apiece from sophomore midfielder Kraig Chiles and junior forward Raul Bautista en route to a 4-2 victory over Missouri-Kansas City Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the result, the Aztecs improved to 4-0-1 as they are off to their best start since the 1991 campaign when they began the season with seven straight wins. UMKC, meanwhile, saw its record drop to 1-3-2 on the year.

Chiles opened the scoring for SDSU at the 16:24 mark. Johann Helgason's corner kick on the ground was dummied for Chiles to run onto and place a shot to the lower left side past Kangaroo goalkeeper Todd Dohlman.

The Aztec midfielder struck again just before the break (42:54), taking a long cross from the left by defender Ryan Reott and volleying a shot from 10 yards past Dohlman. The goals were the second and third of the season for Chiles.

After out-shooting the visitors by a 13-2 margin over the first 45 minutes, San Diego State came out in the second half looking to add to its lead. Their play was rewarded in the 55th minute when Bautista took a ball that was sent across the face of the goal from the right by freshman Kevin Werbner and blasted a shot back to the right side of the net.

Bautista added SDSU's fourth less than five minutes later (at 60:03), taking a pass from Dennis Sanchez, putting the ball past a pair of defenders, then running onto it and slotting it past Dohlman.

UMKC got a pair of consolation goals late as they were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute. The Kangaroos' Ryan Kaufman stepped up and put the ball past SDSU keeper Tally Hall for the first goal by an opponent in five contests. The score ended Hall's streak of 454:35 minutes without allowing a goal, but he still has not conceded a score from open play in 2005.

With junior goalie Luis Trejo in net for the final eight minutes for SDSU, UMKC added a second with 30 seconds remaining when they were awarded a free kick on the right side. UMKC's Robby Borchardt's strike made its way across goal and was blasted in by teammate Jake Winchell.

The match ended San Diego State's string of four straight shutouts, the third-longest such streak in the 38-year history of the program.

"It's sad to see our goalless streak ended like it did on a penalty kick, bit it was a great run by our defense," noted head coach Lev Kirshner. "I'm only disappointed in the calls that led to their two goals, but they took both chances and finished well. Now it's time to move on and get a new run going.

"This was probably our best defensive effort of the season although it's not accurately reflected in the final score. We held a good UMKC side to seven shots and the defense had a dominating performance."

San Diego State returns to action on Thursday, Sept, 22, when it hosts Alabama A&M at 4:00 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck.
