Aztecs Defeat Binghamton To Advance To Tourney Title Match

CLEVELAND - Junior Outside hitter Melanie Greene recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs to lead San Diego State to a 3-0 (30-19, 30-12, 30-24) win over Binghamton at the Medical Mutual CSU Invitational in Cleveland Ohio Saturday morning. Audra Dent added 13 kills as the Aztecs hit .362 for the match while holding the Bearcats to a .160 attack percentage.

Green, who hit .478 over the three games, also had a career-best six service aces, surpassing her previous best of two in a match on several occasions. Dent hit .435 and had three blocks as SDSU won for the third time in its last four outings.

After trading points early in the first game of the match, the Aztecs ran out to a 12-6 lead, increasing that margin steadily as they went on to the 11-point win. Three kills apiece by Greene, Dent and middle blocker Lindsey Mahan paced the Aztec attack.

Game was tied early at 4-4 before San Diego State went on an 18-2 run to take a 30-6 lead and essentially put the contest away. At one point, Greene served eight consecutive points and had four service aces,

The third game was the closest of the three, with the teams battling to a 21-21 score before the Aztecs pulled away. Three kills by Dent accounted for three of SDSU's final six points.

The match saw SDSU record a team season high 11 aces paced by Green and libero Aime Cordeiro who had four. Cordeiro also notched 13 digs to tie Greene for match-high honors in that category.

The Aztecs will now prepare to face host Cleveland State this evening (Saturday, Sept. 17) at 7:00 p.m. (EDT) for the tourney title. Both schools enter the Invitational's final match with 2-0 records.
