LOS ANGELES - San Diego State saw a short two-match winning streak come to an end as it dropped a 3-0 decision to Loyola Marymount at Gersten Pavilion Tuesday evening. The Lions prevailed by game scores of 34-32, 30-25 and 30-21. The victory was the sixth in seven outings for LMU while the Aztecs saw their record drop to 5-4.
Right side hitter Audra Dent was the lone Aztec to reach double figures in kills, finishing with 10 on the night while teammate Melanie Greene chipped in with nine. Lindsey Mahan led SDSU with six blocks including four solo efforts.
Three Aztecs reached double figures in digs led by libero Aime Cordeiro with 13. Freshman Alicia Waller had a dozen while setter Kristen Castillo had 10. Castillo's total tied her SDSU career best, a mark she had achieved twice previously as an Aztec.
Loyola Marymount's Heather Hughes led all players with 16 kills while fellow Lions Christianna Reneau and Dina DeBernardi had 12 and 11 respectively. As a team, LMU hit .246 for the match while holding SDSU to a .144 attack percentage.
The first game was a heartbreaker for San Diego State as it rallied from a 27-24 deficit, fought off match point trailing 29-28, and had a chance to win it by going ahead 30-29. However, the Lions held firm and emerged with the two-point victory at 34-32.
The next two games were almost identical to each other. The teams were close through the first half of the contest, then LMU would go on a short run and maintain its lead to the end of the game.
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to Ohio to play in the Medical Mutual CSU Invitational hosted by Cleveland State. SDSU's opening match at that tournament will see them face Niagara on Friday, Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) in CSU's Woodling Gymnasium.
