SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team held its first two-a-day practice session of the season Saturday afternoon on campus at the SDSU practice fields. With three weeks remaining until the season-opener, the Aztecs had two-hour practice sessions in the morning and in the afternoon.
The Aztecs are scheduled to hold a single practice on Sunday at 9:35 a.m. before holding their first scrimmage of the fall on Monday at 10 a.m.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH Tom Craft
general comments:
"Everyone is excited about the first day in pads. The intensity is good like it always is early but its rough. I don't think there is anyone who thinks that everything is perfect at this point and it's not going to be. We will keep adding the days up and seeing how fast we can improve and put us in position to be really efficient."
on freshman linebacker Andrew Schantz:
"There are young players that are not overwhelmed with the speed of the game or the physical nature of the game or the situation and he is one of them. He plays with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
"This level does not overwhelm him and that is when you get a young player early in his career that will get an opportunity to play. Not everyone is like that. It is good for him right now. He is grasping the learning part of it and applying it without any difficulty."
on the upcoming scrimmage:
"I have not figured out how many plays we will scrimmage on Monday. I would hope that we give the two quarterbacks (Kevin O'Comell and Darren Mougey) 25 plays each. Matt (Dlugolecki) will probably get about 15 plays and Kevin (Craft) will get somewhere around 10 plays. That's somewhere around 75 plays and it does not count special teams."
