SAN DIEGO - San Diego State pitcher Bruce Billings has been named an amateur Star of the Month by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
The sophomore right-handed pitcher from Morse High was named the 2005 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year in addition to being named to the all-MWC team. Billings, a 6-0, 195-pounder, held MWC opponents to a league-low .235 batting average in 11 appearances while posting a 4-3 record in conference play.
Overall, his earned run average of 3.85 led the league. He struck out 112 batters in 107.2 innings while compiling a 6-5 record. His strikeout total was the fifth-most in a season for an Aztec pitcher. He recorded a career-best 10 strikeouts on three occasions this past season (vs. Long Beach State, U. of San Diego and New Mexico).
Billings was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on two occasions and was one of four league hurlers to earn the honor twice during the 2005 campaign.
Billings is pitching for the Wareham Gate of the Cape Cod League where he appeared in four contests (20 innings) with no decisions and a 2.25 earned run average.
