SAN DIEGO - San Diego State shortstop James Guerrero and left-handed pitcher Alex Hinshaw were selected by Major League clubs during day one of the 2005 First-year Player Draft on Tuesday, June 7.
Guerrero, chosen in the sixth round by the Florida Marlins, was the first Mountain West Conference athlete selected and he is the eighth Aztec to go in the first six rounds over the past six seasons. Hinshaw was selected in the 15th round by the San Francisco Giants.
A junior from Fontana, Calif., Guerrero is a two-time all-Mountain West conference selection who batted .370 this past season with 16 doubles, eight triples, five home runs and 54 runs batted in. He holds the Aztec career triples record (16) and also ranks among the SDSU career top 10s in at bats, runs, hits, total bases, walks and hit by pitch.
Hinshaw, a junior from Claremont, Calif., came to SDSU this past season from Cypress Junior College. In his one year as an Aztec, he compiled an overall record of 5-7 with a 4.63 earned run average, striking out 85 batters over 83.2 innings. He garnered all-MWC honors in 2005 after going 4-3 in league play with a 4.07 ERA.
A total of 18 rounds of player selections were completed by the 30 Major League teams on Tuesday with rounds 19 through 50 scheduled to be held on Wednesday (June 8) starting at 9:00 a.m. (PDT).
