CARSON, Calif. - Former San Diego State All-Americans Heather Heron, Shayla Balentine and Aja Frary competed in the 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Home Depot Center.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Heron finished the preliminaries in 14th place with a time of 13.37, to earn a spot in Sunday's semifinals.
Balentine tied three other athletes in the pole vault final at 13 feet 5 ¼ inches, but finished in 12th place after a jump-off.
Frary, a 2001 All-American ended day one of the heptathlon in 12th place with 3223 points after completing the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. The heptahlon continues Sunday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.
Balentine and Heron completed their collegiate careers two weeks ago, both earning All-America accolades at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Balentine was runner-up in the pole vault, while Heron placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles. Frary finished third at the 2001 NCAA meet and holds the SDSU heptathlon record.
