SAN DIEGO - San Diego State redshirt freshman golfer Megan McLeod (Fallbrook, Calif.) has earned a trip to the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, slated for July 11-16, in Kansas City, Mo. McLeod finished second in the sectional qualifying tournament Thursday, carding a 70 at the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta, Calif.
McLeod, who had to place in the top eight to advance to the championships, was three strokes behind medalist Eun Jung Lee of Korea, who finished with a 67. McLeod's 70 is tied for eighth-best among the sectional qualifiers reported by the United States Golf Association's website as of June 17. Sectional qualifying tournaments continue throughout the country this weekend.
The 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship will take place at the Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo. The first two days of competition will consist of stroke play with the top 64 advancing to match play. The final, set for July 16, will consist of 36 holes.
The women's amateur public links is open to female amateur golfers who since Jan. 1 of that calendar year, have been public course players and have not held privileges at any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public. Previous champions of the women's amateur public links include several current LPGA Tour members, as well as golfing phenom Michelle Wie, who won the 2003 title at age 13.
