SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team (26-28 overall, 4-16 MWC) plays host to this week's 2005 Mountain West Conference championships, May 12-14, at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs, the tournament's No. 6 seed, open play with a 2 p.m. match-up with No. 3 seed Colorado State Thursday afternoon.

Top-seeded BYU claimed its second regular season conference crown with a 16-2 league mark and is currently 41-12 overall. UNLV is seeded second, followed by No. 4 Utah and No. 5 New Mexico.

The double-elimination tournament opens with an 11:30 a.m. game between Utah and New Mexico, before the Aztecs and Rams take the field at 2 p.m. in a re-match of last Sunday's regular season finale, which saw SDSU sweep a doubleheader.

BYU and UNLV both received opening round byes with the Cougars playing the winner of the Utes-Lobos game Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Rebels will go against the winner of the SDSU-CSU contest to finish the first day of competition, starting at 7 p.m.

Four games will also take place on Friday, while the MWC championship is slated for Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA softball championships.

This week marks the second time that San Diego State has played host to the MWC championships. The Aztecs last played host in 2003.

SDSU has advanced to the last four MWC championship games and has an all-time record of 8-7 in the tournament. A year ago, the Aztecs defeated New Mexico (2-1) in the semifinals before falling to Utah (3-0).
