SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Sophomore right-hander Cody Campbell threw six innings of no-hit ball in relief as San Diego State defeated Utah, 10-3, to remain alive at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Tournament being held in Salt Lake City. Campbell was aided by some clutch hitting on the part of the Aztecs, who scored seven of their 10 runs with two outs.
The win improved SDSU to 26-34 on the season while Utah, which was eliminated from the tourney with its second loss, ended its year with an overall record of 19-36.
Campbell (2-0), who came on in relief of starter Ben Coon in the fourth after the Utes opened the frame with a single, allowed only two walks and striking out five over his six innings of work as he picked up his second win of the year. At one point, he retired 13 consecutive Utah hitters.
San Diego State took a quick 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Lance Zawadzki that scored Quintin Berry, who had led off with a single. The Utes responded with two runs in the second, only to see SDSU regain the lead with a pair in the bottom of the same inning on a two-out two-run double by Berry.
After the Utes plated a run in the third to knot the score at 3-3, the Aztecs took the lead for good with two more in their half of the third, this time on RBI singles by Zawadzki and Curt Mendoza.
With Campbell on the mound, SDSU nursed its 5-3 lead until the sixth when it scored twice on a two-out double by James Guerrero, then added two more in the seventh on a two-out bases-loaded pinch hit single by Kasey Perry.
Lance Zawadzki capped the scoring with a solo homer in the eighth, his 10th of the year. It was the third of his team-leading three hits and three RBI on the afternoon as he becomes the first Aztec to reach double digits in homers in a season since Paul Lockhart hit 11 during the 2000 campaign.
Berry and Guerrero had two hits apiece on the afternoon with a double and two RBI while catcher Jordan Swaydan had two hits and scored three times.
San Diego State now awaits the loser of this afternoon's Brigham Young-UNLV contest, and will play that squad in an elimination game tonight (Friday, May 27) at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) at Franklin Covey Field. The winner of that contest will advance to Saturday's championship game, but will have to win twice tomorrow to claim the title.
