ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - After scoring just one run in the first two games of the series, the San Diego State offense exploded for season highs in runs and hits in a 28-10 win over New Mexico Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque. With the win, SDSU improved to 22-31 overall and 15-11 in the Mountain West Conference. The loss ended UNM's four-game win streak as it dropped to 23-28 (13-14 MWC).
SDSU's run total tied the school record for runs in a game in the Division I era (since 1968) and the hit total was one shy of the Aztec record of 29.
Sophomore starting pitcher Brett Douglas went six innings allowing six runs (four earned) as he recorded his first win as an Aztec, improving to 1-3 on the year.
San Diego State opened the game with five runs in the first. After the first two batters were retired by UNM starter Darren Coltrinari (7-4), a hit batter and six straight hits gave the Aztecs a 5-0 lead as they sent 10 men to the plate.
After adding three in the second, including two on Curt Mendoza's sixth homer of the year, SDSU sent 13 batters up in the third, scoring seven times. Again, all the runs came after the first two hitters in the inning were set down. Quintin Berry capped the rally with a three-run homer to left center to put the visitors up 16-0.
In addition to Mendoza and Berry, James Guerrero also homered for SDSU, adding a two-run shot in the final inning. Four of the Lobos' runs came on solo home runs with right fielder Chris Dabbs hitting a pair.
Every starter in the SDSU lineup collected at least two hits on the afternoon, led by Jordan Swaydan, Lance Zawadzki and Joseph Scaperotta with four apiece. Quintin Berry and Zawadzki led the team with five RBI each while Mendoza and Swaydan drove in four. Mendoza also scored five times.
With three league games remaining, the Aztecs are in third place, three games ahead of the Lobos and three-games behind second place BYU, whom they host in San Diego beginning Wednesday (May 18) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
