LOS ANGELES - The 47th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team, making its 18th NCAA tournament appearance, saw its season come to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 30 Arizona State in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Marks Tennis Stadium on Friday morning.
San Diego State fell behind early as a result of losing the doubles point. Alesya Vidov and Eliska Krausova were first off the court after falling to Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Following the loss, Nina Spaeth and Sisse Nielsen dropped an 8-4 decision to the ASU duo of Joslynn Burkett and Rebecca Rankin to give the Sun Devils the point.
In singles, SDSU lost the first set in five of the six matches. At No. 1, Arizona State's 46th-ranked Capannolo used a, 6-2, 6-0, effort to defeat Vidov to increase the Sun Devils' lead to 2-0. Soon thereafter, Nielsen lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to bring ASU to within one point of advancing to the second round.
With Dita Hauerlandova, Indra Erichsen and Spaeth all engaged in close matches, Krausova was fighting out of a hole herself at No. 3.
After losing the first set, 6-3, the freshman fell behind early in the second before closing the gap. Down 5-4, she fought her way back to tie the match at five apiece. Unfortunately, Krausova was unable to win the next two games sets as she lost, 7-5, to give ASU the win.
With the defeat, the Aztecs end the 2005 season with a record of 16-11.
