ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico used four home runs and an excellent pitching performance as it defeated San Diego State, 16-0, Thursday afternoon at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque. The Aztecs (21-30 overall; 15-10 MWC) were baffled all afternoon by Lobo right-hander Karsten Gaarder (2-7) as he limited the visitors to four hits and did not allow a runner past second base.

On the offensive side, UNM second baseman Jason Pacheco and designated hitter Chris Carlson connected for a pair of homers apiece off SDSU starter Alex Hinshaw. The Aztec lefty lasted just 3.2 innings as he suffered the loss, his first since April 2, to fall to 5-7.

New Mexico (22-27; 12-13 MWC) grabbed the lead in the first on Carlson's homer, increased it to 2-0 on Pacheco's homer in the third, and moved out to a 5-0 advantage in the fourth with a three-run outburst capped by Pacheco's second home run, a two-run blast to dead center field.

Freshman Joel Matthews came on in relief of Hinshaw in the fourth and retired seven of the first eight batters he faced, five on strikeouts. However, He was touched up for three runs in the seventh on four singles and a walk as the Lobos moved out to an 8-0 lead.

One inning later, New Mexico began with seven straight hits, including Carlson's second round tripper, and a walk before Jared Suwyn was summoned from the bullpen in relief of Matthews. All told, the Lobos sent 12 men to the plate, scoring eight runs to put the game away. Pacheco had a pair of hits in the frame and finished with five on the day.

For the Aztecs, center fielder Quintin Berry accounted for half of his team's hits with a pair of singles while Jordan Swaydan had the team's only extra-base knock, a two-out double in the fifth inning.

San Diego State and New Mexico continue their three-game series on Friday (May 13) at noon (MDT) in Albuquerque.
