REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The San Diego State lightweight boat defeated California in the first day of competition at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores, Calif., on Saturday.
After the host Stanford Cardinal (7 minutes, 5.83 seconds) defeated the Aztecs (7:16.59) earlier in the morning, the boat, consisting of senior Amanda Bremseth, juniors Vanessa Kenley, Coby Vandenberg and Rachael Vrooman, and sophomores Jenny Allen, Caitlin Carrion (coxswain), Deidra Little, Ashley Pfohl and Lynda Shuker, bounced back to defeat California in its final race of the day. SDSU raced to a time of 7:27.88, almost 11 seconds ahead of the Golden Bears (7:38.81).
In other news, the San Diego City Championships, which would have featured the SDSU varsity, junior varsity and novice eight boats, and the varsity and novice four boats, were postponed until Tuesday due to high winds and unsafe conditions.
The lightweights will continue competition on Sunday, when they face Wisconsin at 11:40 a.m.
