Aztec Softball Notches First Conference Victory, 1-0 Over Utah

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>San Diego State ended its eight-game losing streak with a second game win over visiting Utah 1-0. The Utes won game one 5-0 behind a strong performance from pitcher Brianna Gourdin. The Aztecs improve to 23-19 and 1-7 in the Mountain West, while Utah falls to 12-17 and 1-3 in MWC play.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

In the first game, Gourdin (8-7) limited SDSU to three hits and a walk, while the Ute bats were able to pick up nine hits and use three Aztec errors to score three in the third and two in the sixth. Of the nine hits for Utah, six were of the infield variety off of starter Cori Janelli (9-10), who went six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Katie Cochran pitched a perfect seventh in relief.

Game two saw Celena Velasquez (11-7) return to form, tossing her seventh complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out seven. On the weekend Velasquez pitched 13.2 scoreless innings, striking out 11 and allowing a total of six hits with just one walk.

The Aztecs got the only run they would need in the second inning, as Allison Smith singled to centerfield to leadoff the inning followed by a sacrifice and groundout to move her to third, then Lacey Craft laced a double to right center to net the lone RBI of the day for SDSU.

Smith (1-for-5, 1 R), and Craft (1-for-5, 2B, 1 RBI) led the Aztec batters on the day. Diana Phillips was 4-for-6 to lead the Utes at the plate.

SDSU will travel to UNLV next Saturday for a conference doubleheader, game time set for 5 p.m.
