SAN DIEGO - San Diego State and Brigham Young concluded the second game of a doubleheader begun Thursday night with the Cougars prevailing, 2-1. BYU improves to 22-8 and 4-0 in the Mountain West, while the Aztecs fall to 22-18 and 0-6 in MWC play.
Game two resumed with one out and no runners on in the top of the fourth and BYU leading 2-1. Kristen Carranza slammed a triple and Taryin Casillas knocked an RBI single to score the Aztec run, but it wouldn't be enough as clutch hitting continued to be the biggest SDSU foe, as the Aztecs stranded nine runners and missed numerous opportunities to tie the game with runners in scoring position.
Katie Cochran (3-2) got the start but lasted only a third of an inning, allowing three hits and a walk, resulting in the two Cougar runs. Celena Velasquez replaced Cochran, giving up no runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.
Casillas (2-for-4, 1 RBI), Allison Smith (2-for-4) and Lacey Craft (2-for-2) led the eight hit attack for SDSU. Brooke Boyce (5-2) picked up the win and Daniella Urinecho notched her first save for BYU.
SDSU will host Utah in a conference doubleheader Saturday, game time set for 1 p.m.
