SAN DIEGO - No. 41 San Diego State extended its winning streak to seven with its 5-2 victory over 26th-ranked San Diego Wednesday afternoon at SDSU Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 11-5, while the loss snaps the Toreros five-match winning streak and fall to 13-5 on the season.
SDSU started the contest off on the right foot by winning the doubles point. Benedikt Stronk and Armando Carrascosa ended their three-match slide by defeating Nic Beuque and Pierrick Ysern, 8-5, at No. 1. Following their lead were Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero at No. 3. The duo won their seventh in a row with an 8-6 effort over Robbie Blair and Thomas Liversage.
In singles, San Diego got on the scoreboard when Carrascosa retired at No. 4. Daniel Jung recaptured the lead for the Aztecs when he posted a, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Oscar Plotnik at No. 6. The win is the senior's fifth in a row.
No. 64 Stronk fell at the top singles position to ninth-ranked Ysern, 6-3, 6-2, but just moments later, Dickhardt upset No. 67 Beuque at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1.
The clinching match for SDSU came at No. 3 where Chris Groh downed Mirza Koristovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, for his sixth consecutive win.
Dontia Haynes finished the day for the Aztecs with his fourth straight victory, a 6-4, 6-3, effort over Liversage at No. 5.
San Diego State will be in action this Friday as it hosts Hawaii at SDSU Tennis Stadium. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
