SAN DIEGO - Aztec senior Gilberto Rodriguez finished second, his best placing of this season and the second best of his career, and helped San Diego State rally to a third-place team finish at the 21-team Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Tournament in Lompoc, Calif. on Tuesday.

Rodriguez, a senior from Tijuana, Mexico, carded a final-round 72, giving him a three-round total of 2-over-par 218. He finished the tournament in a tie for second place out of the 108 entries, one-shot behind medalist Louie Bishop of UC Davis. This marked the best finish for Rodriguez since claiming the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 16, 2003. His previous best finish this season was a tie for 32nd in the Barona Collegiate Cup Sponsored by Callaway Golf last October.

Rodriguez helped San Diego State bounce back from an opening round 303, to post consecutive rounds of 295 and 292. The Aztecs, which were in 12th place after 18 holes, posted the second best scores of both the second and third round, to end the tournament in third place. This is the third consecutive tournament in which SDSU has placed in the top three.

UC Davis claimed the team title with a score of 15-over-par, 879. Washington State placed second, eight shots back and San Diego State was third 11 shots behind the leaders. The Aztecs finished in front of 18 teams, including Hawai'i, San Diego, Oregon State, Wyoming and Utah.

All five Aztec players shot 74 or better in the final round of competition. Senior Aaron Choi fired a final round 73 and finished in 20th place at 7-over-par 223. Andrew Scott carded a 73 and completed play in 24th place at 8-over-par 224. Chad Mosrovic and Linus Nilsson each posted scores of 74 on Tuesday. For the tournament, Mosrovic finished in 32nd place and Nilsson finished in 66th place.

The Aztecs will be back in action on April 16-17 at the U.S. Intercollegiate presented by The Maple Fund hosted by Stanford.
