PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State men's golf team tied the school record for 54 holes with a 30-under 834 Saturday at the PING Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs, ranked 51st nationally, ended up fourth overall in the team standings, 14 strokes behind first place Fresno State, at the par-72, 6,950-yard Riverside Country Club.
SDSU matched the school record for 54 holes set back in 2003 at the Fresno Lexus Classic. The Aztecs logged a 279 in the final 18 holes on Saturday, tying for their third-lowest round of the 2004-05 season. Three MWC schools were in the top four at the PING Cougar Classic, including host BYU (828) and Colorado State (829).
Individually, the Aztecs had four players finish in the top 17 in the field of 100. Junior Andrew Scott (Henderson, Nev.) ended up 9-under 207, including a third round 70, to tie for eighth. Classmate Josh Warthen (Pismo Beach, Calif.) had the team's only sub-70 performance in the final 18 holes, jumping from 33rd to 15th place with a 4-under 68.
Seniors Aaron Choi (San Diego, Calif.) and Gilberto Rodriguez (Tijuana, Mexico) tied for 17th place at 5-under 211, while senior Linus Nilsson (Linhamn, Sweden) tied for 44th with a 216.
Fresno State claimed the top two individual slots as Mark Modglin was the medalist with a 14-under 202, just one stroke better than teammate Ryan Carter.
SDSU will head to the MWC championships next week in Sunriver, Ore., April 28-30.
