SUNRIVER, Ore. - The San Diego State women's golf team opened the 2005 Mountain West Conference championships Thursday with a first round 316 and currently sits in fifth place at 32-over par. The Aztecs, who were fourth in the same event a year ago, trail leader No. 25 UNLV (295) by 21 strokes at the par-71, 6,312-yard Meadows Golf Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
With each of SDSU's five golfers seeing their first career action at the 54-hole MWC tournament, the team turned in a solid 316, its best score for 18 holes this spring. The Aztecs have a 16 stroke advantage over sixth place Wyoming, while they are 12 behind fourth place Brigham Young. New Mexico, ranked 14th nationally, is in second place with a first round 300, followed by No. 55 Colorado State which is third with a 302.
SDSU sophomore Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) ended day one in seventh place with a three-over par 74. Oliver's 74 is the team's best round this spring and ties as the sixth-lowest first round score by an Aztec in the six-year history of the MWC tournament. Oliver birdied holes No. 8 and 18 and had 11 pars on the day.
Freshman Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) carded the team's second-best score with an eight-over 79, including birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, and is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard. SDSU's lone upperclassman at this year's MWC tournament, senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), is two strokes in back of Booth with an 81, while freshman Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) is just one behind her with an 82.
Freshman MacKenzie Swecker (Winnemucca, Nev.) rounded out the Aztecs' line-up with an 83 in the first 18 holes.
UNLV's Elena Kurokawa holds a one stroke lead in the individual standings over BYU's Rachel Newren. Kurokawa (69) and Newren (70) were the only two in the 30-golfer field to finish the first round under par.
