SAN DIEGO - San Diego State extended its winning streak to five with its 4-3 victory over 58th-ranked Brigham Young Saturday morning at SDSU Tennis Stadium. The win improves the Aztecs' record to 9-5 on the season and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Cougars fall to 13-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Aztecs began the day by losing the doubles point for the first time in five matches. The lone SDSU doubles win came at No. 3 where Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero notched an 8-4 victory over Christian Hand and Shane LaPorte to give them their fifth straight triumph.
In singles, Chris Groh used a 7-5, 6-2 effort to defeat Hand at No. 4 to post his fourth consecutive win and get the Aztecs on the scoreboard. Moments later, Daniel Jung followed with a, 6-2, 7-6(2), victory over Dominik Kaufhold at No. 6 to increase SDSU's lead to 2-1.
After Armando Carrascosa fell at the third position to BYU's Jeff Das, No. 43 Benedikt Stronk came through with a gutsy performance and defeated Nima Roshan, 7-6(2), 6-4, at No. 1 to give the Aztecs a, 3-2, match advantage.
With SDSU needing only one point to clinch the match, Dontia Haynes came through in the clutch and outlasted the Cougars' Jonathan Sanchez in three sets. The Aztec senior fell in the first set, 6-3, but bounced back to blank Sanchez, 6-0, in the second. In the third, the two went to a tiebreaker with Haynes pulling it out with a 7-6(3) win.
San Diego State will look to extend its winning streak to six tomorrow as it hosts UNLV at noon.
