SAN DIEGO - The varsity boat took first in the California Cup "B" heat to pace the San Diego State crew team on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on the Crown Shores of Mission Bay on Saturday. Three other boats also competed for the Aztecs at the event, which sees crowds of 15-20,000 watch 3,400 athletes from 150 rowing programs of all levels participate.

The varsity boat won their heat with a time of 7 minutes, 1.5 seconds, followed by Kansas State (7:07.53) and San Diego (7:14.00). The boat, consisting of Alison Abrams (coxswain), Mia Lysen (stroke), Sarah McKillip (seven), Brittany McMahon (six), Ashley Paiko (five), Katie Heisinger (four), Nancy Balt (three), Amanda Briggs (two) and Audrey Edney (bow), had the second-fastest time of three heats, trailing only Central Florida, which won the "A" heat in 6:58.9.

The varsity boat will now compete in the California Cup Grand Final at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

In other action, the lightweight finished second in their heat and second overall behind Stanford (7:17.5) with a time of 7:18.93 to advance to Sunday's grand final at 1:20 p.m.

The novice boat advanced to tomorrow's grand final after placing second in its heat (7:21.72) behind California (7:06.1). The novice final will be contested at 10:50 a.m.

The SDSU JV boat finished fifth of six in its heat with a time of 7:13.59.
